- Years
- 1492–1833
- Role
- Seat of the court from 1601 to 1606
The Chancillería court was definitively established in 1489, and in 1561 a fire destroyed 440 houses, after which Felipe II, born in the town in 1527, gave it Spain's first regular Plaza Mayor. It received the title of city on 9 January 1596 and, at the urging of the Duke of Lerma, was the seat of the court from 1601 to 1606, the years in which the future Felipe IV was born. After the court returned to Madrid, the 17th century was one of crisis and falling population, and recovery did not begin until the 18th.
