The cathedral that Juan de Herrera designed over the foundations of a collegiate church begun in 1527, and which began to rise in 1589; at Felipe II's request the church was raised to cathedral rank in 1595. It was consecrated in 1668 with only the three naves built, the façade was finished in 1733 with the upper stage by Alberto de Churriguera, and only 40 to 45 % of the project stands. The present tower dates from 1880 to 1890, because the 18th-century one collapsed in 1841; it is visited together with the Diocesan and Cathedral Museum.

We count visits ourselves, with no cookies and nothing stored on your device. To count people rather than clicks, we keep a one-way code derived from your connection and browser for at most 48 hours and then delete it; what remains is totals per page that identify no one. We never store your IP. We also use Plausible, analytics hosted in the European Union that likewise sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device, to learn which sites send readers here and how many searches are run, never what is searched for.
