The charterhouse founded when Martin the Humane granted the royal estates of Valldemossa to the monks in 1399, where James II had built a palace for his son Sancho, and which the Carthusians inhabited until 1835. Its church, in the Neoclassical style, was begun in 1751 over the earlier one of 1446. Chopin and George Sand spent the winter of 1838 to 1839 in one of the cells; the complex is visited together with its municipal museum.

We count visits ourselves, with no cookies and nothing stored on your device. To count people rather than clicks, we keep a one-way code derived from your connection and browser for at most 48 hours and then delete it; what remains is totals per page that identify no one. We never store your IP. We also use Plausible, analytics hosted in the European Union that likewise sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device, to learn which sites send readers here and how many searches are run, never what is searched for.
