A castle-palace that Pedro Fajardo y Chacón, first marquis of Los Vélez, raised between 1506 and 1515 over the Andalusi alcazaba; it began with a Gothic structure and soon moved to the Renaissance style. From outside it is a fortress on an irregular hexagonal plan, dominated by the keep. Its Macael marble courtyard was sold in 1904 and has been mounted in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York since 1945; the courtyard space was restored between 1994 and 1998, without that decoration, and the castle belongs to the Junta de Andalucía.
