Habsburg and Bourbon Spain

Vic

Today: Spain

Years
1492–1833
Role
Episcopal city of the Vic plain

In 1450 King Alfonso the Magnanimous bought from the descendants of the Montcada their half of the city and so unified it. The defeat of the archduke's supporters in 1714 was a setback, but the economic and demographic revival of the 18th century let the city grow and brought numerous civil and religious buildings, among them the present cathedral. In the 19th century the Seminary revived the tradition of the old cathedral school and of the Literary University of Vic of the 17th century.
