The Baroque cathedral-basilica begun in 1681 at the initiative of Juan José de Austria, from designs by Felipe Busiñac and Felipe Sánchez that Francisco de Herrera el Mozo continued; it reached its present size in 1730. Ventura Rodríguez designed the Holy Chapel of the Virgin, built between 1750 and 1765, and Goya painted the vault of the coreto in 1772. The domes went up mostly between 1796 and 1872, and the corner towers, of the 20th century, were not finished until 1961.

We count visits ourselves, with no cookies and nothing stored on your device. To count people rather than clicks, we keep a one-way code derived from your connection and browser for at most 48 hours and then delete it; what remains is totals per page that identify no one. We never store your IP. We also use Plausible, analytics hosted in the European Union that likewise sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device, to learn which sites send readers here and how many searches are run, never what is searched for.
