Habsburg and Bourbon Spain

Zaragoza

Today: Spain

Years
1492–1833
Role
Seat of the institutions of the Kingdom of Aragón until 1707

With the dynastic union of the crowns of Castile and Aragón it became one more city of the Trastámara and then the Habsburg monarchy. In 1591 the disturbances over the imprisonment of Antonio Pérez ended with the execution of the Justicia Juan de Lanuza, and in 1707 the Bourbon conquest cost it its autonomy and its fueros. It grew from 30,000 inhabitants in 1725 to 43,000 in 1787, and in 1808 and 1809 it withstood two sieges by the French troops.
