Of the church of the Hieronymite monastery that Juan II founded and Fernando el Católico and Carlos I built, only the Renaissance alabaster portal survives, carved between 1512 and 1515 by Gil Morlanes the Elder and finished by his son, with the Catholic Monarchs kneeling. The French blew up the monastery in August 1808 and what was left was pulled down in 1836; the present church, the basilica, dates from the late 19th century.
