Roman Hispania

Salmantica

Today: Salamanca, Spain

Years
27 BCE–409

Hannibal took the Vettonian town of Helmantica in 220 BCE, and after the Second Punic War Rome laid it out again on the hill of the cathedrals, leaving the cerro de San Vicente. Inscriptions from the start of the empire and a togate statue from the forum suggest that Augustus raised it to a Roman town. The Vía de la Plata, the bridge over the Tormes and the Cerca Vieja come from those centuries.
