Alcañiz

Today: Spain

Years
1492–1833
Role
City from 1652, former Calatrava commandery

Alcañiz, where the council had been gaining ground on the Order of Calatrava, received the title of city from Felipe IV in 1652 for its support against the Catalan revolt of 1640. It built its town hall between 1565 and 1570 and, from 1736, the Baroque church of Santa María la Mayor. The French took and sacked it in 1809, and the occupation until 1813 wiped out more than a third of the built-up area.

To count people rather than clicks, we keep a one-way code derived from your connection and browser for at most 48 hours and then delete it; what remains is totals per page that identify no one.
