Algeciras
Today: Spain
- Years
- 1704–1833
- Role
- City refounded by the exiles of Gibraltar
Destroyed in 1379 and uninhabited until 1704, when refugees from Gibraltar, taken by the Anglo-Dutch, settled in the old medina around the hermitage of Saint Bernard. From 1721 Jorge Próspero de Verboom laid out the new city in grid blocks, of which the northern part of the Villa Nueva survives. It received the title of city on 6 September 1755 and was the base of the Spanish squadron in the siege of Gibraltar of 1779.
