Habsburg and Bourbon Spain
Cáceres
Today: Spain
- Years
- 1492–1833
- Role
- Town of the Real Audiencia and provincial capital
Until the 18th century it was just one more town of Extremadura: in 1753 only 1698 families lived there. In 1653 it bought, with five other towns, a joint vote in the Cortes of Castile, from which the province of Extremadura arose, and in 1790 Charles IV set up the Real Audiencia of Extremadura here. In 1822 the province of Cáceres was created with the town as its capital.
