San Carlos del Valle

Today: Spain

Years
1501–1833
Role
Pilgrimage village of the Cristo del Valle

It grew up in the 16th century around the hermitage of Santa Elena, whose Santo Cristo del Valle drew pilgrims; the Crown and the Council of the Military Orders built a new shrine and lodgings, finished in the reign of Felipe V. Under Carlos III, Pablo de Olavide gave it the regular plan that still structures it, and in December 1800 Carlos IV made it a municipality independent of Membrilla.
