Years
1492–1833
Role
Renaissance university town

Baeza, which was the capital of the short-lived Kingdom of Baeza until 1246, grew in the 15th and 16th centuries on grain and cloth; by the middle of the 16th its population was double that of the century before. It had a university from the bull of 1538 until its final suppression in 1824, and a small nobility built manor houses and public buildings. The Lisbon earthquake of 1755 damaged most of its buildings and homes.
