Habsburg and Bourbon Spain

Estella

Today: Estella-Lizarra, Spain

Years
1512–1833
Role
City of the merindad, on the Camino de Santiago

The castle of Estella held out until 30 October 1512, three months longer than Pamplona, and was pulled down in 1572 while Vespasiano Gonzaga was viceroy. The city lost weight as a stage of the Camino de Santiago and strengthened its craft and trade role; a printing workshop opened in 1546, and on 17 November 1592 Felipe II stopped there on his way to Pamplona. In the 18th century it was adorned with Baroque buildings.
