Ronda
Today: Spain
- Years
- 1485–1833
Ferdinand the Catholic took Ronda on 22 May 1485 after a long siege, and many Muslim monuments were remodelled for the new situation; the town spread into the quarters of the Mercadillo and San Francisco. The Real Maestranza de Caballería was founded in 1572, and in the 18th century the Puente Nuevo and the bullring were built, both by Martín de Aldehuela. In the War of Independence the French pulled down the castillo del Laurel, the town's alcazaba, and the population fell from 15,600 to 5,000 in three years.
