Habsburg and Bourbon Spain
Palma
Today: Spain
- Years
- 1492–1833
- Role
- Capital of the Balearic Islands
Palma, the old Ciutat de Mallorca that James I conquered in 1229, entered a period of decline in the early 16th century, with the Germanías revolt and pirate attacks, and then built a Renaissance wall and the polygonal bastion of the quay. The Nueva Planta decrees of 1715 separated the government of the island from the municipal one, and under Charles III trade with America made the port grow. In the division of 1833 it became capital of the Balearic Islands.
