Habsburg and Bourbon Spain

Santiago de Compostela

Today: Spain

Years
1492–1833
Role
City of the Apostle's tomb and seat of the archbishop

In the 15th century the city had between 4,000 and 5,000 inhabitants, and in 1495 the Estudio Viejo, the seed of the university, was founded. It was the seat of the Royal Audiencia of the Kingdom of Galicia from 1508 until it moved to La Coruña in 1578. In 1643 Felipe IV made Santiago the sole patron saint of Spain, and the prosperity that followed paid for new building all over the city: the Compostelan Baroque.
